As a pastor's wife for more than forty years, Carolyn Staley is no stagger to 'dark valleys.' But it was not until May 2008, with the stunning diagnosis of Stage 2 colon cancer, that she was brought to the brink of the Valley of the Shadow of Death. Passage through this dreaded valley proved a difficult journey that too her through major surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. As a firm believer in divine sovereignty, Carolyn never doubted that God's will and providence had appoint her 'cancer' trail. Or that He was in control of every detail. Ne nevertheless, she fround herself drawn into a great spiritual conflict.
At times, faith burned brightly. She was able to trust the Lord and rest in His perfect will. But many was the time when she found herself praying, "Lord, I believe; help Thou mine unbelief." For her great battle has not been so much with cancer, as with the fear and anguish that go along with such a diagnosis.
Shunning idealistic language, Carolyn's journal is an honest account of this dark period of her life. A time of humbling self-knowledge and valuable lessons learned. It is her personal testimony of God's faithfulness and the sufficiency of His grace, even when His children struggle with fear and mistrust. Truly, the will of God will never lead His people where His grace cannot keep them. Though they walk through the valley, His powerful hand and guardian grace will attend their way and guide them safely through.
